Tricia Vesely gave a presentation today at Saqqara, the site of the Step Pyramid, on Imhotep - the architect and builder of Egypt's first pyramid.

The Step Pyramid was built for King Djoser of the Third Dynasty (c. 2667-2648 BCE). It began as a mastaba tomb that was gradually expanded. It consists of 6 "steps" that were thought to symbolize a ladder leading to the heavens by which the Pharaoh might ascend to join the sun god in the afterlife. The Step Pyramid and its surrounding funerary complex are also noteworthy for being the first buildings to be constructed entirely of stone. Imhoteps innovations transformed both architecture and burial customs in Ancient Egypt and ushered in the era of the Great Pyramids of the Old Kingdom. Imhotep was later deified and worshiped as a god of wisdom and healing. He was one of the only human who was not a Pharaoh to be elevated to such a status.
